Love is cruel
Love is ironic
Love is a tool
Love is idiotic
It defies explanation
Twisting, spiraling, leaping
Without cessation

How does it conquer?
How does it rule?
It crushes, it breaks
Yet still is a jewel
If you love something
You should let it go
Yet I just can’t leave
That warm, buttery glow

It strikes without warning
At first is a blessing
Then leaves us broken
Gasping and guessing
The glass is half empty
Even when half full
But I want to smash the glass
With the rage of a bull

No matter if concealed
In dress, cloak, or suit
Love will be always
The heart’s delicious fruit
It ensnares and entangles
Dripping intoxicating juice
And all the while
It tightens the noose

Whispers in your ear
Then swiftly melts away
Comes back a second later
To lead you astray
Locks you up
Then gives you the key
But you refuse to come out
Suffused with your glee
Ah, love is mystical
So what do I know?
But hear this, child
It turns friend into foe

What I want to address
Is behind that sweetness
How can the heart
Be ever so heartless?
This is quite an old poem of mine. Actually, one of my best. :D
Anyway, enjoy! =P

I agree with Millennial. Things get in love's way, causing pain and sorrow, and anything less than love would not be able to survive that, but love is the most powerful thing that exists. There are many feelings that people mistake for love, and you're describing one of those other feelings in this poem. I used to not believe in real love, but the fact of the matter is that without love, the world would fall apart. There are many different kinds of love, of course, but the kind that is most easily tainted is the boy+girl (or girl+girl or boy+boy) type of love. We let ourselves get in the way of that, and you have to become young again to fully comprehend it. Sometimes we rush into those false feelings that we call love, and we get hurt. To identify real love you have to simplify it. Is he only looking out for me? Am I only looking out for him? Love is easy in its natural form, but the challenges you have to overcome are harder to face, but that doesn't make loving someone a burden. True love will be the best thing that ever happened to you. I promise.

It's well-written, of course. No doubt about that. It portrays powerful emotion in few words, which, of course, is exactly what every writer is going for.

Love is a drug trip, a chemical rush and rollercoaster.

It gets you high, happy, sad, to do stupid things, causes loss of apetite, absent-mindedness, even suicides. In most serious cases, it can cause marriage. :)

Some have good trips, some bad. Some long, some short. Effects of this narcotic vary considerably as practically countless variables between trippers can cause almost limitless effect variability. Serious drawbacks and even mental disorders possible.

One of most powerful hallucinogens and mind alterers, use with extreme caution.

Thats the problem see, you don't control the amount of dosage. You can only cope with the effects of chemicals raging in your brain and making you euphoric.

Yes it is. On a raw realistic level without the blinding shade of euphoria. It is most interesting when people get agitated and even angry when this love is described for what it really is.

A great rush of chemicals and their after effects in a body of an animal made to ensure the continuation of species in their biologic selfishness. My genes up to the front, into the future, me me me, my offspring etc. Very same effects can be seen in every animal combat and struggle for a change to mate and reproduce. Programmed urge written in a dna. Biological machine executing it's programming.

And yes, i have certainly felt the great love. Yet i can and dare to observe and describe it for what it is without all the countless tons of pink gloria which of course is not made up but a description how that love drug feels.

Sorry, but that's just not what love is. You're describing carnal attraction, base instinct, animal-like emotion, or even just plain old lust, but that is not what love is.

Real love is not a rush of hormones from physical excitement, love is a decision. It's commitment, trust, patience, compassion, empathy, kindness, and it's hard work. Yes, emotions play a part, but to describe love as nothing more than a swirl of chemicals and genetic wiring is like seeing a gorgeous sunrise and calling a mere swirl of gasses. You've been blinded to the beauty of it, and reduced it down to nothing.

You're hardly alone in that, of course. The poet who posted this deviation doesn't know what real love is either. And as long as you both listen to people who tell you that love is just some feeling, a euphoria brought on by lighting up different parts of the brain, the truth will continue to elude you. Real love surpasses such fluffy nonsense. That's why marriages between people who really love one another last, even though the "spark" of their attraction comes and goes.

We're not animals, and we don't have to act like them. We're meant to be more than that.

" Sorry, but that's just not what love is. You're describing carnal attraction, base instinct, animal-like emotion, or even just plain old lust, but that is not what love is. "

It is, sorry for reality dose. You act like a religious person without any place to hide in the face of reality that love is a chemical trip and euphoria, among all other mostly positive feelings that include in a relationship.

" Real love is not a rush of hormones "

Love is a rush of chemicals and their after effects. Not rush of hormones, although they relate to that.

" Yes, emotions play a part, but to describe love as nothing more than a swirl of chemicals and genetic wiring is like seeing a gorgeous sunrise and calling a mere swirl of gasses. "

Such caller would be 100 % right. Why you somehow think that when someone calls something for what it really is, it should somehow be less beautiful. That is beyond me.

" You've been blinded to the beauty of it, and reduced it down to nothing. "

Exactly what i don't understand. Truth does not reduce nothing to nothing, exatcly the opposite. Your religious fervor is ridiculous. Plus, love for everyone is a personal chemical experience, so you actually can't tell to anyone what it really is. What it is for you, may not the same for another. A personal experience by personal chemical attributes are unique, there lies the real beauty of 'love'. Although, many individuals experience these chem effects much in the same way.

All emotions are chemical trips in human brain, get over it and please try to avoid the ludicrous thinking that this fact somehow lessens the beauty of 'love'. I am very happy to look at beautiful garden and like it for it is.I don't have to imagine that there are pixies in it.

" And as long as you both listen to people who tell you that love is just some feeling "

It is a feeling, made by chemicals in your body. A plain fact. Listening anyone is not required, all emotions are chemical prosesses. A plain fact.

" Real love surpasses such fluffy nonsense. That's why marriages between people who really love one another last, even though the "spark" of their attraction comes and goes. "

"Real love" is when chems work together and 'mix well' as they say. This "spark" is only part of it. And what your real love when it crashes and burns ? Ofcourse then it was just chemicals right ? :)

" We're not animals, and we don't have to act like them. We're meant to be more than that. "

Thats exactly what we are, just a little smarter and a lot crueler towards each other and all life. Besides, some animal species have much higher percentage in succesful permanent "marriages" than human. That too is a plain fact.

It is most interesting to observe a person frantically defending a misguided faith and illusion that is esaily cracked with clear scientific facts. Just like religious nuts, i guess they fear so much that all beautiful vanishes if they look at it for what it really is.

I think world and life gets far more beautiful that way.

Most of problems and certainly the biggest ones in this world root to reluctance of accepting unavoidable facts. That is why people have so much problems today despite all the excess, they refuse to observe their problems for what they and their causes really are, instead they blame others.

Long story short:You can't deny that all emotions are chemical prosesses. Thus you can't deny that love and all positive and negative emotions that precede and follow it are too.

It is that simple.

You're mistaken, but I'm not going to waste as much time as you have trying to convince someone who's already decided to believe what they will. I would like to point something out, however.

". . . you actually can't tell to anyone what it really is."

And yet, here you are trying to tell me exactly what love is. Your own statements are full of contradictions. You even say that "people have so much problems today despite all the excess, they refuse to observe their problems for what they and their causes really are, instead they blame others." Pretty funny to hear that someone who reduces human behavior to nothing more than chemical reactions actually believes in personal responsibility.

On top of everything else, you seem to think of yourself as the very keeper of truth, which is terribly amusing, all things considered.

And by the way, I merely stated a fact. This "religious fervor" you speak of is nothing more than a straw man you've set up to make yourself seem like the reasonable party.

" You're mistaken "

Once again :

1.All emotions are electro-chemical reactions in human brain.

2.Thus 'love' and all it's derivatives are too.

This is not a matter of belief but a scientific, empirical fact.

" And by the way, I merely stated a fact. This "religious fervor" you speak of is nothing more than a straw man you've set up to make yourself seem like the reasonable party. "

Now you succumb into plain and feeble lies in your religious desperation, all because you can't refute the plain fact that all emotions are electro-chemical reactions in human brain.

Is truth really that scary or are you just a troll ? I think you noticed how wrong you are and now just try to troll about it.

Once again, just in case you are not : :)

1.All emotions are electro-chemical reactions in human brain.

2.Thus 'love' and all it's derivatives are too.

This is not a matter of belief but a scientific, empirically provable fact.

Hows that for a falsely alleged strawman ? Refute that believer. :)
